Timber framed walls
Quality insulation in the walls of your home is necessary to maintain an efficient overall thermal envelope. Insulating the floors and ceiling is not enough, as heat will look for a way to escape. As well as keeping the heat in, wall insulation can double as a moisture barrier. Not only that, it will help make your home quieter. Acoustic insulation between internal walls acts as a noise barrier and is worth considering around media rooms, between bedrooms, and between bedrooms and bathrooms or ensuites.
For timber frame construction, insulation is generally placed within the wall framing. A material R value of between R2.2 and R2.8 is needed for the South Island. Various products are available to suit 90mm stud sizes. If you desire even greater energy efficiency, consider using 140mm studs as this will allow even higher R value wall products to be used.
Masonry walls
For solid construction systems such as masonry block, the insulation can be placed on the outside of the wall, within the block on the outermost side, or on the inside, to create a passive thermal envelope.
