Ceiling insulation
As most heat escapes through the ceiling, good ceiling insulation is paramount. Generally an R3.6 ceiling product is the minimum required for the South Island. An air gap of at least 25mm needs to be maintained between the ceiling insulation and the building paper under the roof, so this needs to be taken into account when considering the thickness of insulation to be used.
It is important to use quality products and the most effective method of installation. Placing insulation between the joists means that heat is still lost through the wood. By placing a blanket layer over the top of the framework in the ceiling, you can achieve a greater R-value for your ceiling insulation.
